Intimidation is the most frequent, followed by simple and aggravated assaults.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently published its annual report on hate crimes, documenting that 1-in-10 hate crimes committed in 2022 occurred at schools. This represents 1,336 incidents out of the 13,346 hate crimes recorded by the FBI that year.
Schools were not the most common location for recorded hate crimes; homes and residences were the most common, making up 29 percent of the data; roads and alleyways placed second at 19 percent.
In the five-year data, the report also documented that schools experienced the highest jump in hate crime occurrences between 2018 and 2022. Documented hate crimes have increased significantly overall in the last five years, rising from 8,492 incidents in 2018 to 13,345 incidents in 2022.
